Seeing Yourself as a “Product of Circumstance”

I spent a good portion of my life believing I was a “victim of circumstance.” Mainly, this had to do with my not growing up with money, understanding money, or having money.
I dedicated a chunk of my life trying to understand why I was at the mercy of said circumstances, only to come to find that they weren’t all that terrible. Still, my brain always wanted to default to this mindset that I was “a victim.”
“Where’s mine?”
That’s what I used to ask when I’d see poorly skilled people being handed great jobs, or afforded opportunities through nepotism.
Then one day, I realized that the victim mentality was not taking me anywhere. It was holding me back from achievement because instead of seeing an opportunity, all I saw was lack. I was unable to connect, as I was constantly resentful of others. I judged my success on the successes of others, and it was noticeable.
Finally, I did what I like to call “the Five Year Rewire.”
I stopped seeing undesirable circumstances from the past as “reasons why not,” and instead, started seeing them as “what made me capable.”
I began to take responsibility for myself, and my life, and suddenly, all I received was abundance.
Takeaways from this podcast:
1. You are the biggest obstacle in your own way.
2. In order to overcome challenges, and find opportunities in challenging times, you first need to see yourself as the hero in your story.
3. If you’re unsure what to do, find a person who you admire, who you want to be like, and just fucking do everything they do.
Reframing your mindset from “a victim of circumstance” to “a product of circumstance” can take you boldly in the direction of your choosing. Go forward confidently, knowing that all you’ve crawled through makes you the most capable to know the way.
