The Adjustment Period After Changing Your Identity Andee Scarantino

Surprise! Another “changing your identity” episode!

But why?

People like to think that changing a bad habit is simple, but outside of the physical addiction, there’s an entire element of identity that gets shifted when you change anything about yourself.

The problem? Most of the people in your life don’t change right along with you.

When we deal with friends and family that operate with a knowledge of us that is dated, we are inclined to respond with one thing: fuck you.

This is not because we want to tell people to go fuck themselves, but rather we are hurt that the people in our lives haven’t kept up to speed with us in the deeply personal ways we are trying to make change.

The best way to combat this, and I could stand to be reminded as well, is to avoid the “fuck you,” and opt for simply showing consistency.

If you’ve started a weight loss journey, be consistent when your friends try to coax you into going out for shitty food.

If you’ve begun running, be consistent with the schedule, and don’t let the enticing offer for margaritas derail you.

If you’re trying to practice a more peaceful approach to life, be kind to remind yourself, and say about half of the fuck you’s that I’ve said in this podcast.

Over time, everything will start to feel more normal. Until then, keep your head up high.
